The Details Article

7 // The Good Fathers

Kevin Federline and Larry Birkhead; Ages: 29 and 34

Meet America’s new parental role models. We all expected Kevin Federline and Larry Birkhead to crash and burn as fathers. Instead, by being more visible presences in their children’s lives than many Hollywood A-listers, they emerged as unlikely candidates for Dad of Year.

“To be a father is . . . everything,” says Federline, who was awarded sole custody of Sean Preston and Jayden James in October. “I mean, to me, it’s the best thing in my life.”

The New Dad, as represented by K Fed and Birkhead, is involved. He trucks the kids to the supermarket, decorates their bedrooms, and even lets them dictate the direction of his career. “I’d actually like to play somebody other than a bad guy or an ass,” says Federline, who’s made some forays into acting recently.

“My TVs are pretty much G-rated right now. Anything from SpongeBob to Finding Nemo, and you know, I’m still trying to decide which one I like more.”

For his part, Birkhead may have proved even more definitively than Federline that being the guy the judge calls Daddy has become this decade’s most efficient method of scuzz removal. US Weekly now runs photo montages of Daddy Birkhead helping Dannielynn blow out the candles on her first birthday cake.

“It keeps you on your toes,” Federline says of fatherhood. “It shows me how little I am.”

Wisdom from the backup dancer who was once ball-and-chained to Britney Spears? Father used to know best, but maybe now he knows even better.

Britney and Kevin To Share Kids At Christmas

Lawyers for Britney Spears and Kevin Federline faced off in a hearing Monday to hammer out a holiday visitation schedule for their children.

According to Federline's lawyer, the former couple agreed to share time with Preston, 2 and Jayden James, 1, over Christmas. "There was a proposal by Kevin that the holidays be shared in a certain fashion. That was agreed to. That's the best for everyone involved," Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told PEOPLE Monday. "[Federline] was pleased it was accomplished without really submitting it to the court."

Speaking after dining at the Palm restaurant in West Hollywood, Kaplan declined to list the split of time for Christmas morning, but said it was the best way to celebrate for the children. "It's important for the kids to spend time with each of the parents – especially on special days," said Kaplan. "And that is Kevin's desire."

Spears's lawyer had no comment after the hearing Monday.

During Thanksgiving, Spears took the boys to the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills for a brunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Later that afternoon, the singer dropped them at Federline's home. Also at issue in court Monday was the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services' request for access to the former couple's case file – in particular documents, which have been redacted.

A lawyer for the county was present in the courtroom, and requested that media be removed before he addressed the court. Neither Spears nor Federline was present. The couple's next scheduled hearing is set for Jan. 23.

Kevis Federline Lands Cover of Details Magazine's 'Power List'

Who's the 7th most-influential man under 45? Well, according to Details magazine, that man is Kevin Federline. And they even gave him the cover!

Technically, Britney Spears's ex-husband shares the spot with former Anna Nicole Smith beau Larry Birkhead – under the title "The Good Fathers" – as the publication declares, "By being more visible presences in their children's lives than many Hollywood A-listers, they emerged as unlikely candidates for Dad of Year."

In accepting the honor, Federline, 29, tells Details: "To be a father is ... everything. It's the best thing in my life."

Who’s your daddy? K-Fed, that’s who

Kevin Federline graces the December issue of Details magazine. He's been named one of its “50 Most Influential Men under 45.”

Kevin Federline, father of the year? Well, not quite, but Details magazine has deemed Britney Spears’ famous ex one of its “50 Most Influential Men under 45.”

To be specific, Federline, 29, is listed in the No. 7 slot as a “Good Father” alongside Larry Birkhead. Federline, a father of four to be exact, tells the magazine that “To be a father is… everything. It shows me how little I am.”

Little as he might be, his acting career is getting bigger, at least by Federline’s standards. One lament: “I’d actually like to play somebody other than a bad guy or an ass,” he tells Details.

And although the decisions in his ongoing custody battle with Spears speak for themselves, Federline reveals a snapshot of life inside his household. “My TVs are pretty much G-rated right now. Anything from “SpongeBob” to “Finding Nemo,” and you know, I’m still trying to decide which one I like more.”

Hearing Today- Child Welfare Wants Info

Brit and K-Fed's custody case is on the docket today, and sources tell TMZ that reps from the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services will make their case to the Commish -- gimme gimme gimme more info.

We're told DCFS has open investigations into both Brit and K-Fed. We're told most are frivolous, but DCFS has a legal obligation to investigate. So they want Commissioner Scott Gordon to open the files in the custody case.

In addition, we're told the lawyers will discuss vacation schedules, including who gets the kids on Xmas.

Britney and Kevin have their next court hearing scheduled for today. Kaplan, K-fed's slimey lawyer, has told the press that neither Britney nor Kevin will be present for the hearing today according to X17. Both have their reps attending the hearing though.

K-Fed's Lawyer: Britney and Kevin Sharing Kids Over Holidays
MONDAY NOVEMBER 26, 2007 06:05 PM EST
By Bryan Alexander and Ken Lee

Lawyers for Britney Spears and Kevin Federline faced off in a hearing Monday to hammer out a holiday visitation schedule for their children. According to Federline's lawyer, the former couple agreed to share time with Preston, 2 and Jayden James, 1, over Christmas.

OK! Exclusive: No End to Britney Custody Battle in Sight

While many had expected that today's hearing in the ongoing custody war between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline would be a day with at least a handful of final, definitive rulings handed down from the court, the legal eagle for wannabe rapper K-Fed tells OK! that, in actuality, things are far from over.

"It's not like in a civil trial where an order will be handed down to resolve the case," Mark Vincent Kaplan explained to OK! after Monday's hearing. "In family court, a case can go on as long as the children are minors."

Well, considering the oldest of the two boys is barely 26 months old, that could mean almost two more decades of courtroom showdowns. Does Kaplan see any hope for a resolution in the near future? "I have to say that much will be resolved at the April hearing when we expect the evaluation will be done," he tells OK!. "You can't expect to go to a full hearing if one set of evaluations is not complete."

Regarding reports that the visitation schedule has been modified to allow Britney to have the boys on Christmas, Kaplan would only say, "I think Kevin would feel it's absolutely appropriate for both parents to see the kids over the holidays."

As of now, the lawyers aren't set to duke it out until after the New Year. But as we've seen, that can change in the blink of an eye — or a stoplight.

Britney Spears Hires Private Investigator, Kevin Federline's Attorney Says He's "Not Concerned"

Kevin Federline's attorney is speaking out about a recent report that Britney Spears has hired a private investigator to dig up dirt in their ongoing custody battle.

TMZ.com first reported the news Monday.

"I think that if that is what they need to do, or have to do, to have at it," Federline's counsel, Mark Vincent Kaplan, tells Usmagazine.com. "I don’t think it will, in anyway, be a good expenditure of funds. But I can’t stop that from happening."

However, he said it would be a waste of time for them to follow Federline, 29, around.

"I don’t think he would be concerned about it, and I don’t think he has to change anything he is doing in order to address that," Kaplan added.

DRIVING UPDATE

Meanwhile, Spears' attorney Anne Kiley revealed Monday to Usmagazine.com that Spears — who has been banned from driving with her kids in the car — has decided to hire a driver to avoid any dangerous incidents with the paparazzi.

Though Kaplan said he hasn't seen that Spears, 25, has hired a driver or read Kiley's statement, he tells Us, "anything that puts the children in a car that reduces the risk ... I am all for that."

He added, "We are only concerned when she is driving the kids."

For Federline's part, Kaplan said his client tries his best not to take his kids out in front of the paparazzi. "He’s pretty good about keeping the kids at home with him unless there is really a compelling reason why they need to be going somewhere," he said.

THANKSGIVING PLANS

He would not comment whether Spears will celebrate Thanksgiving with her sons on Wednesday, and Federline will have them Thursday, as reported by TMZ.com Monday.

"I think that nobody wants to be celebrating the holidays without their kids," he said. "I’m sure that will be worked out in a way that makes sense for everybody."

Kevin's New Year Plans

It's been an odd year for Kevin Federline. Following his split from Britney Spears in the fall of 2006, many had assumed the father of four, who began dating Britney while ex-gal Shar Jackson was still pregnant, would gladly hand over the two small sons he shares with her, so he could continue his party-boy ways. And yet, it quickly became apparent that the opposite was true.

Whether at the advice of his attorney or accountant, K-Fed seemingly cleaned up his act, making only the rare public appearance, while Brit-Brit spiraled out of control. And now that his year of being the "good guy" is wrapping up, Kevin will be taking a break from the prim and proper on New Year's Eve as he rings in 2008 in Sin City.

K-Fed has just been announced as the host of the New Year's bash at Las Vegas club Tangerine, where he'll undoubtedly raise a toast to the last 12 months. Let's just hope he doesn't try to entertain the crowd with any tracks from his album.

Britney Made The Decision Herself Not To Drive With Kids

After Friday's hearing in which a judge ordered that Britney Spears is not allowed to drive with her children in the car, the pop star's lawyer has released a statement saying the decision to use a driver was one that Spears made to protect her kids.

Spears attorney Anne Kiley tells Usmagazine.com, "Ms. Spears hopes that she and Mr. Federline will be able to reach an agreement as to all matters concerning their children. She hopes that by not commenting on court proceedings the media attention in those proceedings will subside, which she requests for the safety and well being of the children."

And, in a thinly veiled reference to recent incidents in which Spears has run over the feet of paparazzi, Kiley adds, "Recent aggressive actions by individuals who have followed her and blocked her access, with and without the children, have resulted in her decision to take certain security measures which she hopes will only be necessary temporarily, for the protection of the children. Ms. Spears is grateful for and appreciates the support and well wishes of the many, many people who have extended same. "

Results Of Today's Hearing

TMZ has learned Britney Spears can't drive with her kids in the car.

The move was made after a court hearing today, during which Mark Vincent Kaplan, K-Fed's lawyer, officially informed the judge that Brit blew a red light with her kiddies in the car last week.

We're told Commish Gordon issued the sealed order, as stipulated by lawyers for several of the issues.

Source: TMZ.com

An X17 source told us just moments ago that the judge did NOT order Britney not to drive with the kids today but that he requested that she not.

And here's why ... it's not based on Britney's driving record, but because of the chaos caused by all the paps around Brit. With photogs sticking their feet under the wheel of her car, it's tough for the girl to drive!

X17 was the first to report that the judge asked Britney not to drive with her kids in the car, immediately after a today's 90-minute hearing. K-Fed's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan declined to comment on the court's request, but Brit's lawyer Anne Kiley told reporters that everything "was great."

Shar Jackson Speaks About The 'Family Unit'

Embroiled in an ongoing custody battle with ex-wife Britney Spears, Kevin Federline nevertheless is trying to see that all four of his offspring get along, thanks to a helping hand from former girlfriend Shar Jackson.

Jackson, 31, has two children – Kori, 5, and Kaleb, 3 – with Federline, 29, and says that she watches Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, who are Federline's kids with Spears, 25.

"We definitely make sure the kids all bond together," Jackson told reporters Tuesday night at EA's Launch For The Need For Speed Game in L.A. "I mean, they're siblings, they need each other."

Jackson also stresses that she and Federline strive to keep their family closely knit, despite whatever differences she and he might have. "We're not together or anything but we're definitely still a family unit," says Jackson, who perhaps remains best known professionally for her portrayal of Niecy on the 1996-2001 UPN show Moesha.

"Honestly," says Jackson, "we're like the best of friends. Obviously, the relationship didn't work out for a reason, and we're cool with that. But we're still a part of each other's lives. And our children get to see two people who aren't together but still have a great relationship, and I think that's really important."

Jackson, who in the past has repeatedly praised Federline's parenting skills, says she exclusively trusts him with her kids. "I know he's in a good place," she says, "the kids are in a good place, and I made sure from day one – I told him, 'You make sure you have our children.' "

And just how is K-Fed holding up in the fight with Britney over their kids? "He's great," says Jackson. "We don't even talk about that stuff, because that would be a non-stop conversation, and we don't even go there."

Another Emergency Custody Hearing

Lawyers for Britney Spears and Kevin Federline are due in court this week for yet another emergency custody hearing.

The request for Friday's session was made by Federline's counsel, Mark Vincent Kaplan, who previously insisted the singer not be allowed to drive when with her kids. Concern was raised after videotape surfaced of Spears allegedly running a red light in Los Angeles on Nov. 8. Her court-appointed monitor was in the car with her sons in the backseat.

"Ms. Spears was being mobbed by paparazzi at the time," her attorney Sorrell Trope tells PEOPLE. "She was distracted. This was not blatant irresponsible driving on her part." Trope declined to comment on media reports that the singer recently tested positive for amphetamines.

At their last hearing on Thursday, it was revealed that Spears did not respond in a timely manner to eight of 14 drug-test requests. L.A. Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon also remarked that "as much as I'm happy to see both of you (lawyers) in my courtroom" the weekly hearings were becoming extreme.

The pop star currently only has monitored access to her kids Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1. She is allowed to have them on two occasions per week, one of those being an overnight.

Latest On Custody Battle

We've learned that K-Fed is going back to court tomorrow (8th), arguing that Brit is violating the Commissioner's drug testing order.

Sources say K-Fed's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, will go before L.A. Country Commissioner Scott Gordon tomorrow morning, arguing that Britney has failed to respond in a timely manner when she is called for random drug testing. We're told Kaplan will ask to modify the existing custody order, giving Britney limited visitation rights.

We're told neither Britney nor K-Fed will be present. And, we're told, this could be a real dogfight.

Source: tmz.com

Britney Spears did not respond to eight of 14 random drug test requests, Kevin Federline's attorney said in court Thursday.

Alleging the singer lives in a "parallel universe," lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan reminded the court that the singer had been reprimanded three times by Commissioner Scott Gordon for failing to be reachable by phone.

"Mr. Federline doesn't want to take these children out of their mother's life, but what are we to do?" Kaplan said.

Spears's lawyer, Anne Kiley, called the current drug testing procedure "unconstitutional," adding that just because the singer may fail to respond to testing calls doesn't mean she's using drugs. Kiley also pointed out that Spears has passed multiple tests successfully.

Explaining why Spears frequently changes her phone number, Kiley said the singer's number often falls into the wrong hands. When Commissioner Gordon stated that responding to a morning call wasn't an extreme request, Kiley shot back: "But you're not a pop star with a No. 1 album to promote." (Spears's new album Blackout is No. 2 on Billboard.)

Commissioner Gordon ordered both attorneys to reconvene at 10:30 a.m. to hammer out a new plan for testing. Currently, Spears must submit to twice-weekly random drug and alcohol tests, and is required to give a urine sample within six hours of being called.

The drug testing facility is under court order to attempt to reach the singer three times within one hour. A missed test is considered a failed test.

On Oct. 30, Spears's visitation rights with her sons Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, were scaled back after her parenting coach was critical of the pop star.Spears "rarely engaged with [her] children in either conversation or play" during their monitored time together, the coach testified last month.

Source: People.com

Despite calls for changes in the existing custody agreement between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, the judge in the case ruled today that things are (basically) to stay the same.

Today's emergency hearing dealt primarily with the pop star's apparent inability to respond in a timely fashion to calls from the testing facility for her court-ordered random drug tests. According to K-Fed's attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan, who told the judge that the singer exists in a "parallel universe," Brit has not responded properly to 8 out of 14 attempts (each "failed" attempt consists of three phone calls from the facility within a one hour period).

Britney's excuse? Aside from her lawyer Anne Kiley calling the testing facility "corrupt" and the facility's head a "liar," it appears that Britney's biggest problem is the time at which the facility calls.

"She's a pop star and you can't expect her to be awake at 7 or 8 in the morning," Kiley told the court. When the judge pointed out that he had "no doubt" that Ms. Kiley would respond in a timely manner at that hour, she retorted, "But you're not a pop star with a number one album!"

Rather than point out that Britney's album was actually a distant number two on this week's Billboard list, the judge said "This isn't about who's a rock star... We're all bending over backwards to get her to behave like ordinary people."

Also at issue is Britney's apparent cell phone issues. Both Kaplan and the judge mentioned problems of changed phone numbers, lost phones, assistants answering and then hanging up, calls being forwarded to random numbers and so on.

"Is there a special section in the family code dedicated to Ms Spears," Asked Kaplan. "Should the lab be on standby for when she calls and says 'I'm up now, I'm ready to receive visitors?'"

After a recess, during which the court was unable to secure a new testing facility, Kaplan asked that Britney no longer be allowed to drive the boys, and that if she's in the car with them, another person must drive. The judge shot this idea down, stating that it would in effect be a change to the custody ruling, but not without a bit of scolding for the beleaguered songstress.

"She's a mom. She needs to take responsibility," explained the judge. "It's not about Britney Spears getting up at 8:30am. It's about a court order... Do you want a tech standing by for her? Like a fireman ready to go when she's ready?"

In closing, the judge stressed the need for Britney and her attorney to come up with a dedicated number on which the singer could be reached at all times.

"You can change the number every day," explained the judge, saying that she must let Kaplan and the testing facility know of the change.

Explained the judge: "It comes down to: You get the call, you respond to the call, you get tested."

Personal update from Alison

As you can see by my belly, I have a personal situation that very soon from now is going to take up a lot of my time. It will be the first child for my husband and myself, due in 2 days, although the way I've been feeling today it could be anytime. So I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that for the next little while I may not be updating as much as I usually do. No worries though, Daisy has things covered and will keep this site up-to-date in the meantime.

So best wishes to Kevin, Britney, Shar, the kids and family and friends, and the readers of this blog - I've enjoyed keeping up with Kevin and I'll probably be back before too long.

Britney and Kevin's Financial Details

More court documents in the ongoing custody battle between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline were released Thursday, which revealed some intimate details about their finances.

• Federline receives $15,000 a month in child support payments from his ex. (The amount may change, depending on how much more custodial time he ends up getting.) He is entitled to child support payments until Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, become adults, since Spears is the higher earner.
