Review of Kevin's Webster Hall performance from nymag.com

K-Fed Rocks Near-Empty Webster Hall

Aspiring rapper and Britney Spears barnacle Kevin Federline played his first New York show this weekend — it kicked off the tour promoting his self-released debut, Playing With Fire — and Webster Hall Saturday night was a curious sight indeed.

An informal survey of the crowd yielded a foursome who confessed that they were friends of K-Fed's manager and had gotten free tickets; two judgment-reserving girls who also had free tickets, which they'd won from TRL; a priceless foreign couple who admitted they'd first heard of Kevin Federline "this day"; and one couple with mixed intentions. (She: "I'm not a fan, just really into the tabloids!" He, glumly: "My girlfriend made me come.") And though the venue may have been sorely undersold — estimates put the sparse crowd around 250, a sixth of the Webster Hall's capacity — the impenetrable bunch of hopped-up fans pressed against the stage were an undeniably ecstatic bunch packed five rows deep.

A posse of enthusiastic NYU types, including a pair of Roxy boys with matching bandanas tied around their necks, raised a ruckus on a too small riser at the left of the stage, nubile girls clad in their best strip-mall formalwear gyrated in front of appreciative dates, and more than one pair of drunken-secretary types careened wildly toward the stage upon entering mid-set. Their energy was palpable and — we hate to say — surprisingly infectious. Judging by the screams incited every time K-Fed did, well, just about anything, we'd say it was one of the more hyperactive, scrappy little crowds in recent Webster Hall history, ironic or no. Most remarkably, no one in attendance seemed to mind that the show clocked in at around a half hour — just under a dollar per minute, in ticket-price terms.

Fewer insights were gained from K-Fed's actual performance, during which, flanked by a D.J., a fellow MC, and two writhing dancers, he revealed various likes and dislikes. (Good: New York City, Hennessy Privilege, his family, his Nikes, K-Fed, and wearing one's hat "a little to the side"; bad: the media, haters, the magazines, the media, and the media.) The reviled media wasn't permitted in the VIP section, naturally, so it was hard for us to ascertain whether a certain blonde pop tart was in attendance. Best we could tell, she was nowhere to be seen.

This makes me mad!

You think Britney could afford a babysitter. I can't believe she didn't bother showing up to Kevin's concert debut. I don't know, either she's jealous of his talent, or just self-centered.

um, she is at home taking care of 2 kids in cali and he is in New York. and it isnt like its his first performance. he said himself that they probably would be at home most of the time.its not a rule that she has to be at every performance of his and i highly doubt she is jealous of him or self-centered.i love kevin and all but that was a bit far. and you never know maybe one of the kids are sick or something. i would take this review with a grain of salt, from someone i heard from who actually went there it was a blast and he was really good.this reviewer sounds like a bitter woman that didnt like getting stuck reviewing his show.

Did it ever occur to you that Kevin is trying to break out of the Mr. Britney Spears label and do things on his own. She doesn't have to be at every single thing that he does to show support. She introduced him at his very first performance at the TCAs, she would go to the recording studio with him when she was pregnant, and now she's taken up the majority of the parenting role to allow him to promote his album and follow his dreams. All I ever hear out of Kevin's mouth is how supportive she is of what he's doing. Maybe you should read some of his interviews and see how he describes Britney and the support she shows him before you choose to disrespect her.

It was Kevin's debut for Playing with Fire. It was important for her to be there for him. The media has got it all wrong. Kevin wants to become a breadwinner, and I think that independance scares Britney. I mean look who she married the first time.

well, i think you have britney all wrong. and i dont think you should judge a situation you dont know. when britney is with him at an event she gets all the attention,he wants to break out on his own so its important for britney to let him have the light which is exactly what she is doing, laying low and out of sight.

Riley said it perfectly. Britney has been nothing but supportive!!! Anonymous #1 your comments are way off base!! Not to mention, I don't think Kevin would appreciate your assessment of his wife as jealous or self-centered!!

I really like Kevin's music & hope he does well. But Britney has no reason to be jealous of him now, he isn't even close to her level of success. Also according to People she was in NYC but laid low. Damn that girl is becoming a master sneak these days. I want to see the babies DAMMNIT!! LOL

But I really miss seeing cute pics of Kevin & Britney at events together. I get why they don't do it, since the media would attack & pick apart every pic of them.

I agree with Riley and Kristen. Britney is laying low so Kevin can have his time to shine and that is how it should be and I am glad Britney is doing this. Although I miss seeing Britney can you imagine if she were to show up. All the attention would be focused on her and that would be just wrong. This is Kevins time she will have her RETURN soon enough. I will go to his show when he comes to LA and see for myself how he does. I like his CD. I don't ever listen to reviewers anywho.

Does anyone know how many copies of Kevin's CD sold this week. Because I looked a Billboard.com, and he is not in the top 100. Was the 72,000+ on the first day a lie?

Anonymous said...

I don't think he did sell 72,000 in one day. I think that was rumor. We should know by tomorrow I guess.

Yeah, the 72,000 thing was a lie. Someone on the Hollywoodforums made it up as a "joke" and it just took off from there. It's kinda sad really. It's never funny to laugh and mock at anyone else.

I agree with you Riley, but some ppl are too caught up with the tabs to realize that, I highly doubt Kevin would talk so highly of "my wife" if he felt she wasn't there for him. This is not Britney Spears album why should she be out there everywhere, it's like the media saying she wants to make her big 'comeback' at Kevin album release party, why, it's about Kevin now she can give him her support without having to be everywhere all the time.

KELLY.

the rumors were true, she is in new york with him but has laid really low. she is making a suprise appearance on letterman tonight!

The sad thing is that no matter what she does she can't win. If she doesn't go to all of his events then she's called a non supportive wife. If she does go to all of his events then people would be saying that she's trying to hog all of the spotlight for herself. I really wish people would just leave them alone and let them be.

I think he sold 72,000 CDs, but they didn't count it because I'm sure alot of it was advanced sales. Billboard wants it to be ordered that week. And anyway you won't know cuz Billboard doesn't report previous week sales until the following Thursday.

Damn, let's give Kevin a chance! He is really talented, and I hate the media coming down hard on him.

Britney was in town, and I really think she should have been there as a backup on "Crazy".

She was there with him as some people said but just did not go anywhere with him. She wented to debut her look on letterman. she should support him according to him she does.so it is none of my business.

I tried telling you fools.

Britney wasn't there for Kevin. Most of you are delusional. Taking care of the babies is a line of crap. Kevin just got wronged by a total ho who married her previous hubby for a whopping 55 hours!

Anonymous said...

Wow, some of you are looking really stupid right now.

Britney was there for Britney, not Kevin.

i wished i could have gone to see the performance! what i am mad about is that webster's hall is huge and has like 5 different dance rooms. normally, z100, ny's biggest radio station promotes their saturday nite parties there but they are such kevin haters that they didn't play any radio commercials for kevin's event (i had to hear about the even on hot97).

keep on the grind kevin!
