Federline stops in at local store

HAGERSTOWN - Paparazzi followed pop star Britney Spears' soon-to-be-ex-husband to Wal-Mart in Hagerstown on Friday, causing store officials to call police to control the commotion.

James Hornsby, Wal-Mart store manager, said Kevin Federline and two of his bodyguards came into the store to buy food, clothing and video games.

"They were on their way to Washington, D.C.," Hornsby said. "He said it was the second time in our store."

Federline signed pictures after shoppers recognized him, Hornsby said.

"We had to call Hagerstown city police because of the paparazzi following him," Hornsby said, noting the store has a strict policy about photographers on the premises. "One tried to come inside the store, and the police stopped him."

Spears and Federline created a fresh wave of celebrity news this week when they separately filed divorce papers.

News accounts say Federline, promoting an album, performed in Chicago on Wednesday. He was scheduled to host "Platinum Friday" at Platinum Night Club in Washington, D.C., on Friday night, according to the club's Web site.

Jessica Henesy of Greencastle, Pa., said during a phone interview that she and Kathy Keefer, co-workers at Scotts Lawn Services in Hagerstown, stopped at Wal-Mart during a lunch break.

When they saw three police cars, they figured it was because of a shoplifter.

Inside, at the electronics section, they saw officers and a crowd. Keefer recognized Federline, who married Spears two years ago and has two children with her.

"He was signing autographs," Henesy said. "He was in a good mood."

A few minutes later, police escorted Federline out of the store.

Confirming that "Mr. Britney Spears" was at Wal-Mart on Friday, Lt. Richard Reynolds of the Hagerstown Police Department said, "There were no problems that our officers had to deal with - just some basic crowd control."
